There is so much to see in the Wales that the visitor is well advised to use a hire car to get around. Most places can be reached easily by car, although at busy times some traffic congestion may be encountered. It's best to avoid the rush hour if possible and be patient if you find yourself in a queue.

Driving on the left hand side of the road may be a new experience for some visitors as may well be the use of kilometres to measure distance - one good thing about using a rental car is that it will be adapted to local conditions with the steering on the right hand side and the speedometer marked in mile per hour.

The availability of rentals cars is very good throughout the United Kingdom and there is usually no problem in arranging for a hire car to be left at a different location from where it was originally rented.

The speed limits in the United Kingdom are:

On Motorways the limit is 70 miles per hour. On other roads not showing any lower restriction the limit is 60 miles per hour. In towns the limit is 30 miles per hour.

Drivers face severe penalties if found driving with more than 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

Persons under the age of 17 years are not allowed to drive in the United Kingdom even though they may hold a driving licence issued in another country.

The wearing of seat belts is compulsory.

Drivers can be fined for using a mobile 'phone (cell 'phone) whilst at the wheel of a car, even if stationary at the time. To avoid problems drivers should not use a mobile 'phone at all unless parked in a safe place where it is legal to do so, with the engine stopped and the keys removed from the ignition.

A Congestion Charge is applied when driving in central London, currently this is £8 per day if paid before 10:00pm on the day. After 10:00pm, but before midnight a surcharge of £2.00 is added giving a total charge of £10.00 for the day. If the Congestion Charge remains unpaid after midnight a series of penalty charges is imposed. Congestion and penalty charges will be collected by the car hire company from the renter, even if the car has already been returned to the company.
