Inverness town guide
Inverness is a lively city and capital of the Highlands, it offers the visitor a feast of music, concerts and dance.
The city is a great base for exploring the best of the Highlands, so a hire car here is a must. Look for red grouse on the moors, bottle-nosed dolphins in the Moray Firth, red deer and golden eagles. If you wish to drive a little further, you can always go up to John o' Groats -the most northerly tip of the British Isles.
Take a boat trip from Inverness along the Caledonian Canal to Loch Ness and see if you can spot the Monster.
Now an official long distance footpath, the Great Glen Way goes right down the great Glen from Inverness to Fort William, taking in some of the best scenery in the country.
Serious walkers will be keen to climb some of the Monroes-Scotland's highest mountains- there are 284 of them over 3000 feet high - each of which can usually be climbed in a day.
Drive west in your rental car and explore the empty spaces and grandeur around Torridon and Gairloch, taking in the fishing harbour of Ullapool. Drive east and visit the Cairngorms, maybe taking in one of the many whisky distilleries. Enjoy a whisky tasting - just make sure someone else is doing the driving!
