Sunbury On Thames town guide
Sunbury-on-Thames
Situated within the encircling ring of the M25 Motorway, but close to the edge of London, Sunbury is part of the Borough of Spelthorne. This extensive borough encompasses the communities of Ashford, Laleham, Shepperton, Staines, Stanwell & Sunbury.
There have been settlements in the area for many centuries, but the best-preserved historical attraction is probably the walled garden in Sunbury Park, covering some two acres.
There are many other fine parks in the area catering for the needs of the residents of the borough. With its location on the Thames the area has also become important for water storage and treatment with many reservoirs located here.
For the visitor wishing to venture further by hire car there are many attractions not far distant from Sunbury, for attractive countryside there are the Downs or the Chilterns, each containing many attractive villages and towns to explore. Further away are cities such as Winchester, Oxford or Portsmouth. The World Heritage Sites at Bath and Stonehenge are both within reach within a day trip from Sunbury.
Very close to the centre of Sunbury stands Kempton Park Racecourse, scene of many a delightful day out for keen race-goers. With its own railway station the course is easy to reach from the centre of London.
