Northampton town guide
Northampton is just minutes off the M1 motorway, but from here you can very quickly be in the heart of rural England. Northamptonshire is a county of diverse delights.
Once the centre of the boot and shoe industry, Northampton still has factory shoe outlets. The Market Square hosts England's largest open-air market. The pedestrianised High Streets, arcades and major retail outlets make this a great place for a bit of retail therapy.
For lovers of motor sport, Northampton is close to the home of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and for speedway enthusiasts there is Rockingham Motor Speedway.
There is so much to see and do in this area, that it would be worth hiring a car to visit Boughton House at Kettering - "The English Versailles" - home to the Duke of Buccleuch. The Spencer family home of Althorp - the final resting place of Diana, Princess of Wales is also nearby.
On the grand Union Canal at Stoke Bruerne is the Canal Museum - a must for all canal enthusiasts. A trip on the Nene Valley Railway will temp steam buffs.
