Montelimar town guide
Visitors by hire car will find this capital of the Nougat world signposted off the Autoroute 7 in the Rhone Valley. This area of France, the Rhone Alpes, is said to have the freshest air in Europe. This is a lovely town to stroll through, it has narrow old streets and well kept houses painted so that they reflect the beautiful sunlight. Wander through the Alles Provencales, pause for a drink, enjoy a visit to the eponymous Musee de la Minature and then, probably after another pause for refreshment, visit the Chateau des Adhemar.
Visitors will probably have noticed the sweet smell of lavender, this does not just emanate from the shops selling local produce but, especially in late Spring and Summer, from the surrounding meadows. From the front of the Chateau there is a fine view of the lavender fields. If you take your hire car to one of the surrounding villages, you will be able to take a walk where the scent of the flowers is accompanied by the sound of the Cicadas. There are plenty of excellent cafes and restaurants in Montelimar but many visitors prefer to buy the necessities and have a country picnic.
Before taking to your hire car again, visit the Palais de Bonbons et Nougat, a modern museum of sweets and confectionary with all sorts of interactive features.
