MARNE LA VALLEE
Visitors by hire car will find this community about 10 kilometres east of Paris and just 5 kilometres from Disneyland. It is unusual in France in that it is a new settlement based on a string of villages that follow the river and the road. The designers of the settlement have aimed, with some success, to create a series of linked communities each with own services. The idea is that the inhabitants will be able to live in these villages without the need for regular visits to the nearby metropolis.
For the visitor the area provides a base with reasonably priced hotels and restaurants from which visits can easily be made to either Disneyland or Paris. It is still possible, after a hard day's sight seeing to either sit in a riverside restaurant or stroll on the riverbank. The villages also have their own markets, parks, swimming pools and other recreational activities.
Children of all ages, including those in their second childhoods report that a visit to Disneyland is essential while in this area and the hotels and restaurants of Marne la Vallee are considerably cheaper and more "French" than those at the resort.
