Les Sables D Olonne town guide
LES SABLES D'OLONNE
Visitors by hire car will find that, as the name suggests, this is a sea side resort that has as its main attractions, miles of sandy beaches. This area of the coast in the Vendee region is warmed by the Gulf Stream and claims to be the sunniest in France although those who have been to the South might argue the point.
It is an area which gets very busy in the summer months but, despite this, there is usually a quiet spot to be found on the beaches if you are prepared to move a little way out of the town with your hire car. The whole area is particularly attractive for those with young families.
When you have tired of the beach, there are things to do either in the daytime or at night. Largely due to the influx of visitors which takes place in the summer, there is a wide variety of shops and several markets each week for buying or browsing. There is also a remarkably good Art collection at the Musee de L'Abbaye St-Croix including some thought provoking modern canvasses.
Unsurprisingly, in this area, there are plenty of good fish restaurants to suit all tastes as well as chip and burger joints to suit the childrens' palates. Finally, visitors by hire car will enjoy the Musee d'Automobile a few miles outside town on the route to Talmont.
