Evreux town guide
This pleasant cathedral city is situated on the N154 north of Nonacourt and South of Louviers. Car hire drivers will find it on the River Iton which provides the water for the system of canals around the town. The waterside walks are very pleasant, do not miss the old wash houses near the Pont de Fer and Doctor Guindev bridges.
The main feature of Evreux is the superb gothic Cathedrale Notre Dame with its renaissance screens and magnificent stained glass. Religious buildings abound here and enthusiasts will find plenty to look at.
Evreux is handy for nearby Giverny, the birthplace of Claude Monet, probably the best known of the impressionist painters of the nineteenth century. Monet's Garden is probably the most painted, sketched and photographed scene in the world, but never the less is well worth seeing. Giverny is unashamedly a tourist trap, but art lovers should not only visit Monet's house and museum but also the Musee d'Art Amercaine.
Before setting out again in your hire car you could try hiring some bicycles in Evreux and having a ride around the lovely Normandy countryside. The cycle hirers will give you map with trips of various lengths.
