Epernay town guide
Those visiting Epernay will smell the bubbles from the champagne in the air! This is the main champagne producing town; in fact, anything that purports to be champagne that is not produced in this area is not really champagne but merely sparkling wine. The elegant and wealthy town is situated only about fifteen miles south of Reims on the N51.
It is likely that visitors will want to visit one of the one of the champagne producers, but beware because it is likely that you will not be fit to drive immediately afterwards. It is best to take one of these trips in the morning and then have a good lunch before driving you hire car again. Moet and Chandon give a very impressive tour and are open every day between March and mid November. De Castellane provides a tour which is on a smaller scale to their larger neighbours but it is more personalised and the tastings are excellent. Mercier's tour uses an electric train to take visitors around the cellars.
Epernay provides a fascinating visit for the visitors who enjoy food and drink, but be sure to leave plenty of time for the effects of the champagne to wear off before setting off again in your hire car.
