Dole town guide
Dole
Dole is a delightful small town waiting to be discovered as you explore the Jura in your hire car. It is on the banks of the River Doube and the Canal de Rhone et Rhin also passes through the town. There are establishments here that rent out canal craft of various kinds and this can make a lovely holiday.
This area of France is rich in dairy produce, including the wonderful hard Comte Cheese. This is probably why Louis Pasteur worked in the area in which he was born and in the branch of science that he did. The house where Pasteur was born is now a museum about him and his work.
Having become acquainted with Pasteur and the developments in healthy living, you might want to visit the old hospital or if you can only take so much learning go to the Musee de Beaux Arts. Later on perhaps you might take a boat trip on either the River or Canal.
What ever you do, do not miss the fifteenth century clock tower and the Eglise Notre Dame.
The Jura Mountains are particularly pleasant for walking and there are several really good guided walks that start from the town. There are also sign posted routes on country roads which can be followed in your hire car, the Tourist information Office has details of these.
