Belfort town guide
If you are touring the Jura or the Vosges mountains by hire car, you will be close to this fortified town which is situated on A36 east of Mulhouse very near to both the German and Swiss borders. In fact iBelfort nearly became part of Germany during the Franco Prussian War. American visitors might recognise the style of the statue of the lion which was carved by Frederic Bartholdi who was also responsible for the iconic Statue of Liberty.
Make sure that you walk up to the Citadel which has been fortified at least three times and still provides a fine view of the surrounding mountains. It houses the Musee d'Art et d'Histoire which is about traditions of the area. The other gallery is the museum of Modern Art which has an excellent collection. While you are in the Comte region make sure that you try the superb hard Comte cheese. Railway buffs will be interested to know that this is where the T.G.V. trains are built.
Finally for something different get in your hire car and visit Ronchamp where you can see the Chapelle Notre Dame du Haut designed and built by the famous if controversial La Corbusier.
