Bastia town guide
Bastia
Those touring Corsica by hire car will want to visit Bastia, the most important town economically in the Houte Corse. Walking round the town you will immediately get the feeling that this really is the most important town on the island. The centre of the town is Place de Saint Nicholas where ferries come and go from other parts of the island as well as mainland France and Italy. An enjoyable activity is sitting in the open air with the drink of your choice watching the comings and goings. Terra Vecchia is a smaller and less busy harbour area to find when you have tired of bustle. You can organise boat trips from here.
Of the many churches in Bastia, Santa Marie which is part of the Citadel has a solid silver virgin to see, while the impressive Chapelle Sante Croix has a black Christ which is reputed to have been salvaged from the sea.
Visitors who feel the need to take some more strenuous exercise should see what Objectif Nature has to offer, their repertoire ranges from kayaking to diving via sailing in various forms. By hire car take the N198 and then the N193 and head for this lively town.
