Bandol town guide
Bandol is a seaside place which caters for the yachtsman as much as the tourist. Arriving by hire car Bandol is between Toulon 15 miles and Marseille 30 miles on the D 559 coast road. There are some very pretty beaches surrounded by palm trees as well as pines. The natural creeks formed by the rivers coming down to the see provide natural harbours for yachtsmen and small patches of beach for the land based tourist.
The town itself was first discovered as a seaside retreat by Thomas Mann, Aldous Huxley and others of the literary set in the nineteen twenties and thirties. It is almost the stereotypical seaside place where the original settlement has been taken over by the tourism leaving only a few older buildings. There are many extremely good restaurants and hotels in this town which has a reputation for gastronomy and fine wine. In particular enjoy the Rose wine of the area.
The sea water here is particularly clear which makes it excellent for those who enjoy observing sea life either from the surface or by going deeper.
