Aurillac town guide
Visitors who are also geologists will know that the Auvergne is an ancient volcanic area in southern central France. If you are travelling down the Auto route du Sud towards the South of France you will pass through this area. If you are in a hurry, spare the time at least to stop at the Auto route service station which gives some fine views of these hills.
Aurillac makes a good base for exploring this area by hire car as it is the capital of the Cantal region. The area is very popular with outdoor pursuits aficionados offering a good variety of both mountain and river based activities.
Aurillac itself is a market town. The matket is a twice weekly event. It also has the usual quota of museums and a charming Vieille Ville (Old Town) which is vehicle free during the main part of the day making it very pleasant to stroll through. Lunch here should include some of the splendid Cantal cheese which is not too different to strong Cheddar. You may also be offered aligot, which is a mashed potato, Cantal cheese and garlic speciality of the region.
