Auray town guide
Brittany is a popular area for visitors to France with a hire car , it is close enough to the channel ferries to make for an easy journey while being significantly south so that the chances of good weather are very good.
Auray, situated west of Vannes is close to the delightful southern Brittany Coast, it is well worth a visit and can provide a good base for car hirers to explore this beautiful area, this can include the unique Golfe du Morbihan.
The influence of the sea is ever present in this small town on the River Loch, particularly in the content of the menus outside the restaurants and the produce for sale at the main market which is held on a Monday. This is, and always has been, a popular area for artists and there are Art Markets throughout the summer. The charming but somewhat crudely painted pictures of the Bretons in their traditional costumes make excellent souvenirs, but shop around and make sure that you are not being fobbed off with a poor quality print.
Visit the Port de Saint Goustan and the Old Town look for the steps that were built for Benjamin Franklin in 1776 when he came to France to meet with Louis the sixteenth. This is the area to find the Art Markets.
It was probably the building of the Old Bridge across the river that caused Auray to develop at this spot, the original bridge was built of wood but replaced by this stone one in the thirteenth century.
Drivers of hire cars leaving Auray are strongly recommended to head South East and explore the Golfe du Morbihan which is both beautiful and unique.
