Annecy town guide
In France, but close to Switzerland, Annecy is on the shores of the beautiful Lac Leman just a half an hour in your hire car from Geneva. There is nothing outlandish or shocking about Annecy which is well ordered, clean and tidy, probably reflecting the nearness of Switzerland and its Swiss visitors.
The Old Town is glorious to stroll through and a place to enjoy people watching from a pavement cafe. Stroll too along the lakeside. Visit the Chateau and don't miss the Palais de L'Isle which was once a prison and is situated in the middle of the Thiou Canal complex. It is likely that you will be distracted by the street musicians, buskers or actors who provide entertainment during the summer months. Take time to look up and see the distant hang gliders flying from the surrounding mountains.
The modern part of this lovely city also attracts the strolling visitor as well as the serious shopper calling at the designer shops and up market boutiques. It is probably not surprising that this city that seems to have everything also has a very pleasant beach. Food? Try a Raclette or Fondue at the cheap end of the menu and quite unlike anything that you might have tasted in the nineteen seventies.
